Trash to Treasure: Doll DIYs from around the House (Part 2)

IMG_1596

Welcome to part 2 of this DIY series. Today will will make some slightly larger items and accessories out of items that can be found around the house.

From part 1…I wanted to come up with a few easy DIY projects that don’t require you to have stockpiles of craft supplies at home. I know not everyone has as much on hand as I do and we all need to keep our hands busy during this crazy time. I raided my junk drawer, recycling, and “pre” trash items to see what could be created out of basic household items.

You may have supplies that might make some of these crafts easier, but I wanted to make sure I only used items other than glue and paint that you might find around the house.

For all or most of these crafts, you will need:

  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Craft Glue or E6000
  • Craft Paint

Disclaimer: These DIY’s may contain sharp objects/tools and hot glue. Please use adult supervision if under age.

Spray paint cap, makeup sponges, a sauce lid, cereal box and fabric…who knew? Pardon my horrible nails in the first part of this post!

A left over Easter egg and an old compact make a great glam side table.

Modern Lamp

Unusual items make a modern and sleek lamp…K-cup, toothpicks or cotton swabs, a chapstick, cell cord, a washer or quarter.

I recommend using E6000 in conjunction with a hot glue gun for precision and staying power.

Using either painted tooth picks or used cotton swab stems, glue together to make a thicker lamp stem.

Paper Plate Holders (FAIL)

IMG_1378

A little bonus…This was a fail, but I still wanted to share it because I think these could have so much potential!

Inside of the K-cups there are this little plastic filters that are the perfect size for 1/6 scale plates! I racked my brain trying to figure out how to make them something great. My failed attempt was using Hot Glue to fill in the hole. It worked out okay, but in reality, the best way to do this would be with resin, but since most people don’t have this lying around we couldn’t really do it!

Not everything always works the way you hope, but at least you give it a go!

  1. These are all fantastic and so inspiring. I even love the failed plates. Had no idea K cups had those little filters in them. Going to have my coffee drinking coworkers save these for me. Placed under a doll size paper plate, they would be the iconic church supper plate. Painted red and lined with tissue paper, they’d be serving baskets for any place that advertised ‘gator bites, hush puppies, or chicken fingers. (Admittedly, I am probably not your target audience.)

    1. Thank you! I know, what a great find! I want to perfect where I started! I want to paint some red too. These may be around for a Memorial Day photo story I’m working on… 🙂

      1. MAY I ASK WHAT KIND OF K-CUPS THESE WERE FROM? THIS IS AN AWESOME IDEA THAT MADE ME RUSH TO SACRIFICE 5 TYPES OF K-CUPS. BUMMER THEY EITHER HAD ONLY THE COFFEE PAPER FILTER INSIDE (WHO KNEW?) OR NONE AT ALL. I AM THINKING THAT AIR DRY CLAY ON THE OUTSIDE MOLDED TO THE PLATE THEN PAINTED WITH COOL COLORS AND THE SPRAY PAINTED PLATE PLACED BACK INSIDE WOULD LOOK AWESOME! JUST HAVE TO FIND THE PLATES… P.S. REALIZED TOO LATE THE MESSAGE WAS IN CAPS. I’M EXCITED..NOT SHOUTING. LOL. KEEP THE POSTS COMING PLEASE. I DON’T USUALLY COMMENT, BUT WE LOVE YOUR WORK!

      2. Thank you!! I’m glad you are excited! 😃 I found them in Peet’s & Starbucks Keurig brand cups. I don’t personally use that type of coffee maker, so I’m not sure what else is out there! You can always salvage the cups after use! 😉
